The Asian Public Intellectuals (API) Regional Project focuses on the issue of community-based initiatives and how human-ecological balance is achieved. Project sites are spread in five countries namely in Japan , Thailand , the Philippines , Malaysia and Indonesia . The Regional Project serves as a platform to build collaboration among API fellows and community of practitioners in the hope to contribute positively to the public in these different Asian countries and contexts.

The Regional Project activities can be categorized as follows:

  1. Field research
  2. Artistic expressions
  3. Site visits to the five countries
  4. Engagement with local communities
  5. Dissemination of information through the media
  6. Trans-border knowledge engagement through seminars and workshops

The main objective of the API Regional Project is to build a sustaining API Community in the five countries, and to produce high quality and high impact regional products in the form of a digital documentary, a website and a book. In their final forms, these regional products are expected to function as social networking and marketing tools for both the API Community and The Nippon Foundation.

As enunciated in the Regional Project Document, the thrust of the API Regional Project is to promote a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach towards understanding and highlighting the environmental crisis faced by communities in the Asian region. In particular, it focuses on how local wisdom and community-based initiatives have been garnered to deal with this crisis and to attempt to restore human-ecological balance. Through its site-based activities in the five API participating countries, it hopes:

  1. To deepen relationships between the API fellows and the local communities;
  2. To draw from local wisdom and perspectives in order to better understand the specificities of each site as well as to consolidate these insights to develop regional perspectives on ecological threats and appropriate community action to overcome them.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision of API RP Manager, Project Assistant provides direct administrative support and secretarial assistance to the Regional Project. Specifically, the Project Assistant will carry out the following duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintains, organizes and manages administrative functions. This includes maintaining the Regional Project and supervisor’s calendars, receiving visitors, event organizing and routine secretarial duties;
  • Ensures proper application of administrative rules and standard operating procedures, including data filing and knowledge management on the Regional Project;
  • Establishes system of travel, and processes purchasing of air tickets;
  • Records all expenses, retains all receipts and manages them in a systematic data filing system;
  • Assists the supervisor in managing the financial management of the Regional Project;
  • Assists the supervisor in writing bi-annual reports;
  • Ensures that office supplies, equipment and logistics are readily available;
  • Responds to queries by visitors about the API fellowship;
  • Regularly updates supervisor on the work, minimally once a week;
  • Undertakes other work as set by the supervisor.

Qualification Requirements

The successful candidate will be one who meets the following criteria and performance dimensions:

  • Bachelors (S1) degree from local or international university with at least three years related experience or D3 with seven years of related experience;
  • Some form of training in administrative work and secretarial duties;
  • Good verbal and written communication skills in English and Bahasa Indonesia;
  • Demonstrated ability to apply information technology tools and automated systems including Windows, MS Word, Microsoft Excel and the Internet;
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills and high level of emotional intelligence;
  • A disciplined, self-starter and able to work independently with minimal supervision;
  • A strong team player, who is able to work under stress;
  • Familiarity with international standards of organizational management is required;
  • Previous experience with international development agencies is a definite advantage.
